Please Note: Some ZM models may be received bearing only the "M" mark (10˝M).
This is the same Mouthpiece as the 10˝ZM. The "Z" may be left off of the mark due to tooling limitations.

Trumpet Cup Descriptions:

TF Cup  Not a flugelhorn cup on a trumpet blank, but a brand-new design! It incorporates the depth of sound you get on a flugel piece without the excess cup volume that makes those style mouthpieces difficult to play. It  is in tune to high C and above, yet you can play softly and firmly in the low register. Perfect for soft orchestral passages, intimate jazz settings, or for just "working out". The cup is roughly 1/3 concave (trumpet-like) and 2/3 convex (flugel-like) with a special backbore and a .153" (3.89mm) bore. To compensate for tuning, the mouthpiece is .400" shorter than the standard Curry length of 3.5" You can put this mpc. in the horn and leave your tuning slide in approximately the same position. Initial comments from a test group of Orchestral players and Jazz players have included words like “Perfect!”, “Wow!”

BC Cup    The BC, or "Chicago" cup is actually a 1-piece version of the C rim combined with the Bach-style B cup. Excellent for orchestral work.

B Cup    The Curry B cup is more like a deeper C cup (The Bach B cup is more funnel shaped, and has a different rim). Good when a deep rich tone is required.

C Cup    The Curry C cup is patterned after the Mount Vernon C cups. Each diameter in the line has it's own unique shape. Great for all-around work.

* A word about the medium shallow cups...

You might infer from the table of specifications that the DE, P, ZM (M) and Star cups are progressively shallower. Actually, the ZM, Star, and DE cups are the same depth, but they differ in cup SHAPE.

  • DE/P cups are a true V shape with a relaxed 2nd cup.
  • Star cups are more BOWL-shaped with a tight 2nd cup.
  • ZM (M) cups are a hybrid BOWL-V shape with a medium open 2nd cup.

They are listed in no particular order in the specification chart or in the descriptions below. They each play and sound completely different.

DE Cup    The DE  cup is also a medium depth mouthpiece. It features a slightly more open 2nd cup that allows good volume without getting too edgy. Crossover and piccolo trumpeters will find this an attractive cup.

P Cup
The DE cup offered in the Curry cornet blank for use in piccolo trumpets.

ZM Cup    The Curry ZM cup (usually marked "M" on the mpc.) has proven to be an excellent "crossover" mouthpiece for those players who need to play both classical and jazz. Slightly shallower than the C cup, it's medium cup has enough tone to satisfy most classical needs, yet is bright enough to play parts in a big band.

Star Cup    The Star cup is a more bowl-shaped mouthpiece that provides a sparkling tone and crisp attacks. Also medium in depth, it favors commercial work.

Z Cup    The Z cup is often preferred by lead trumpeters and those who play the higher piccolo trumpet parts. The rim and undercut give support in the upper register. Big sound, rather than edgy, is characteristic of this cup.

XS Cup    The XS cup is ideal for those players who have very little lip intrusion into the cup. It needs to be played with a light touch and fast air in order to exploit it's capabilities!

New "Chicago" Models

The  "Chicago" models were added to the Curry standard line as of April 1st, 2000. The concept behind this mouthpiece is to recreate the sound many "Major Orchestra's" trumpet sections have. Previously only available as a special order 2-piece mouthpiece from the "factory", which as we all know involves months of waiting and a lot of money, I have successfully produced this concept of the "C" rim and the "B" underpart into an extremely consistent, beautiful sounding 1-piece mouthpiece. The bite and undercut of the "C" rim produces clarity of attack and the "B" underpart provides a depth of sound like no other. Balanced with a #24 throat and a #2 (Schmidt-style) backbore, this design lets you play with volume, color, and control. This is the orchestral sound you're looking for!

Available in all Curry standard diameters from #1- 10˝.

Looking for a cup that’s tight and bright, and a rim that won’t tire you out? The 600 Series is for you! Designed for today’s high energy music, these designs help you produce maximum sound with minimum effort! The rim is specifically designed to give maximum comfort while allowing superior flexibility over the entire range of the horn. The bite allows you to comfortably grip the mouthpiece, rather than hooking your chops in. The steep undercut gives your chops the room to vibrate freely , no matter how tired and swollen you may be. The flat-bottomed main cup and short second cup provide the resistance you need to keep from "bottoming out". All in all, this combination of features produce a bright, compact sound that projects like no other! In 10 diameters from .600"-.690". Shallow and Medium cup depths only.

Cornet and flugelhorn mouthpieces are available for every rim size available, or can be made to your specifications.
Deep Cornet  (DC) has a cup depth slightly deeper than the Curry B cup. It also has a relaxed 2nd cup and #25 throat that contribute to it's ease of playing as well as it's true cornet sound.
Vintage Cornet  (VC) is based on the old Conn "Wonder" model. It has a relaxed bite, very deep cup and #18 bore. this gives it the "turn of the century" sound quality and playing characteristics. Special oversize shanks for the F.E. Olds cornet can be special ordered through any of my dealers.

Flugelhorn (FL) mouthpieces  as well as the DC and VC cornets are available in all my Curry Standard rim sizes. The standard cup depth of .75" is more Vee-shaped than bowl-shaped, which contributes to ease of playing and a velvety sound.

Proper fitting of a flugelhorn mouthpiece is more crucial than most players think, so I have designed 3 different shanks to fit virtually all flugelhorns. the "default" shank is the large taper which fits Yamaha, Calicchio, and Kanstul-produced flugels made before 2000. the smaller taper is the Bach taper, fits Bach, Courtois, and Kanstul made after 2000.....and of course the "French" taper, which fits those made with that receiver, including vintage Cousenon.

Design and Concept

Engineered like no other mouthpiece, the CURRY Standard Line incorporates the same rim and bitepoint on the shallowest to the deepest cup within each diameter. This feature gives you the freedom to select the right cup for the job without having to adjust to a different rim.

As shown in the composite drawing, there is a gradual reduction of undercut, or initial slope into the main, or 1st cup, from the deeper B cup, to the shallow XS cup. This feature reduces the volume of  the 1st cup. It also allows for more support in the upper register and a progressively brighter sound. The 2nd cup, as I call it, is the convex  portion of the cup that connects the 1st cup with the bore, or drill hole. Second cup dimensions are especially critical in determining resistance, definition of attacks, as well as the overall character and timbre of sound. Second cup dimensions in the CURRY standard line are consistent throughout each diameter, so that a relatively shallow 3Z has many of the same sound characteristics as the deeper 3C or 3B cups.

I have produced this line using state-of-the-art CAD/CAM technology and CNC machines.
The reasons for doing so are:

Accuracy of parts- these machines are capable of tolerances of .0001" or smaller. This accuracy and high surface finish insure that there is only a minimum of hand-finishing. Hand-finishing with emery and sandpaper is what causes inconsistency in most mass-produced mouthpieces made today.

Repeatability- the mouthpiece you buy from me today will be just like the replacement you order 10 years form now. There's no special tools or cutters to wear out, just easily replaced off-the-shelf tooling that follows a predetermined digital toolpath.

Flexibility of design- almost anything is possible. No longer are we bound by the limitations of the form tool. If you've ever wondered what a 1C would feel and sound like if it was 2% smaller overall, call me, I've got one!

Years of research has proved that that backbore volume, along with rates of taper and shape determine the overall blowing characteristics of a mouthpiece. I have designed the most balanced combinations for the great majority of players.
