The Osmun Turbo Flight Cases provide an answer to this problem. The cases, which look like a small jet packs, places the bell at an angle partially over the body, separated by a removable pouch. The curved sides utilize the arch principle to provide extra strength and rigidity. The cases have backpack straps, zipper closures, and a removable and replaceable cordura cover over rigid fiberglass bodies. Any case that is small enough to make it through the United box is by necessity a very tight fit and thinly padded. The Osmun Turbo Flight case will fit most common screw bell horns. If you travel by air, it could be a lifesaver. These cases are in very short supply. Please call or email us if you want one.
Un-screw the bell from the horn and place the body of the horn flat in the bottom of the case. The mouth pipe will go on the leather patch. At first the horn will have to be pushed gently into the case and will be that way until the padding settles around your specific horn. Please pay special attention if your horn has a leather hand guard or an adjustable hand rest. The Velcro straps are to secure the horn at the bottom of the case, strap down the horn down, so there is no side-to-side sliding of the instrument. Place the bell carefully into the pouch. Place the pouch on top of the body of the horn and slide it back so that it touches the bottom or hinge side of the case, the bell now should be slightly off the body, not directly on top. Now take the Velcro pads and place them on the lid of the case so when you close the lid, the pads will secure the bell flare in the pouch. There will be a little trial and error in this process. You may have to move them several times to secure a snug fit. Also keep in mind if you are going to carry a mute, then you’ll need to compensate for that in your pad placement. (Make sure the mute does not rattle against the bell flare) You may not need to use all the pads, you may need more, and we can provide more. You may place the mouthpiece pouch and oil pouch wherever you like, most people place them in the compartments inside the case near the bell tail. Please be careful zipping up the case. They are stiff at first. and be careful not to catch the material inside the zipper. Please do not over stuff the case with music, clothing, food, etc… Use the backpack straps in tandem, do NOT sling the case over your shoulder with one strap, the buckle and loop will become stressed and will potentially break. Only use the straps when wearing the case on your back, otherwise use the handles on the case. Related Article--Screw Bell Conversion |
