Through his concert appearances with all of the major Canadian
orchestras, James Sommerville has gained recognition as Canada's
pre-eminent horn soloist. He has appeared with the Radio Orchestras
of Berlin and Bavaria, and has amassed a number of important national
and international awards, including the highest prize awarded at the
Munich International Competition, and a unanimous first prize at
Toulon. As a chamber musician, Mr. Sommerville is heard regularly on
CBC Radio, for whom he has recorded all of the standard horn
repertoire. He has performed as guest artist and faculty member at
chamber music festivals across Canada, including the Banff Arts
Festival, as well as touring as a member of the Millennium Chamber
Music Society. Mr. Sommerville's solo CD, Chamber Music for Horn,
released on the Marquis Classics label, was enthusiastically received
by the press and public. A second CD, with the CBC Vancouver
Orchestra and Mario Bernardi, of Mozart horn concertos was released
on CBC's SM5000 label and won the 1998 Juno Award for best classical
recording (soloist with large ensemble). Mr. Sommerville is currently
principal horn of the Boston Symphony. James Sommerville is a Yamaha
